College is offering our NHA graduates some wonderful opportunities for global adventure. Danielle Palmieri, 2011 NHA graduate is currently attending Connecticut College in New London. Danielle related her recent spring break adventures in South Africa.
” For one week I volunteered in Zithulele and lived in a nearby village at a homestay with no electricity. There, I worked with Axium and a literacy program…I helped teach Xhosa students English.
The second week, I was in Cape Town working at the Linawo Children’s Home (they have a facebook page) with the kids there. I climbed Table Mountain, hiked 6 hours to a place called Hole in the Wall, visited Cape Point, and toured Robben Island. I did A LOT of hiking, soul searching, and discovered new cultures. I learned a lot about how South Africa is still picking itself up from the Apartheid and how change only really happens culturally. Had a blast!”
We asked Danielle if she had any words of wisdom for our students, “I would say never ever pass up opportunities, they are so few and far between sometimes that you have to snatch them up when you can. And also, no matter where you go, go with all of your heart, or else don’t go there all at.
Thanks Danielle.
